Call For Papers For a collection on Philosophical and Feminist Perspectives on Adoption Edited by Charlotte Witt and Sally Haslanger In recent years the adoption world has changed significantly in ways that deserve theoretical attention: international and transracial adoptions have increased, openness is becoming the norm in domestic adoption, changes in global economics as well as changes in domestic welfare policy have affected the economics of adoption. So, for example, interracial or international adoption invites us to think critically about how race, ethnicity and culture are related to one another. Adoption provides vivid examples of how class affects one's life prospects and choices, and open adoption provides a context for looking carefully at cross-class relationships. As feminists we are particularly interested in the way that adoption sheds new light on debates over reproduction and mothering, the body, personal identity and the traditional family. We currently have a conditional contract for the book and the project is near completion. However, we are looking for a couple more essays to round out the collection. As a result, we have set a short deadline. At this time, we are especially interested in essays addressing issues raised by: * international adoptions, * alternative family structures that do not fit the heterosexual two-parent norm, * the economic context for adoption. Discussion may focus on topics in a variety of different areas, e.g., law, politics, economics, ethics, history, culture. Original essays of approximately 10,000 words (or 20 printed pages) may be submitted by email attachment to [log in to unmask], or to: Sally Haslanger Department of Linguistics and Philosophy MIT, E39-245 77 Massachusetta Ave. Cambridge, MA 02139 DEADLINE FOR PAPERS: JANUARY 1, 2003 Alease circulate widely.
