Dear Librarians and friends of the Library: I am forwarding on to you a message from Patricia Warren, Executive Director of the Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador. On the weekend of September 20-22,2002, WANL will hold its 15th anniversary AGM and professional development conference in St. John's. It will take place at Memorial University -- lectures and readings in the Arts Atrium area and a banquet at the Junior Common Room. The fee for workshops that include a screenwriting workshop with Ed Riche of "Rare Birds" fame, a poetry workshop with well-known Canadian poet Patricia Young, and several excellent other editing and publishing workshops, is only $45 (the fee includes a delicious lunch). The evening banquet features guest speaker Berni Stapleton and is only $20 for a full-course supper. Of special interest to librarians will be the Cultural Advocacy workshop/panel session/public forum, which will take place on September 21 from 2 to 5, and is free and open to the public. This panel will be moderated by well-known author and activist Helen Fogwill Porter and will deal with how writers, teachers, librarians, and artists working in all media can advocate effectively and work together to help develop and improve this province's literacy education, public and school libraries, and arts institutions. We've lined up what we feel is another satisfying selection of workshops on topics you have made requests for. Our guest this year is Patricia Young, a poet of some note, who is MUN's Writer-in-Residence for this fall. Patricia will read for us on Friday evening, Sept. 20 and we will hold a reception afterwards to welcome her to our province. On Saturday we are holding workshops throughout the day, including two special free workshops for anyone who wants to attend. In the morning we are catering to young writers ages 12-17, offering them a free workshop where they can learn a bit more about writing. In the afternoon we are offering a free Cultural Advocacy workshop, being moderated by Helen Porter, where the discussions will be based on what we, the ordinary person on the street, can do to effectively advocate for the cultural industry. Everyone involved with cultural groups should come along and participate. There is a banquet on Saturday evening with a special guest speaker and the on Sunday morning we will hold our all important AGM meeting. In the afternoon we will celebrate our 15th anniversary with a Writers' Stroll in the downtown area starting at 2:30 p.m. You can walk with us, read from your work and join in anywhere. We will stop in 15 - one for each year - spots beginning with the WANL office at 155 Water Street and ending with the Ship Inn, the cradle of the cultural community. Plan now to attend these events. Register asap as we have to get the numbers for the meals by Sept. 16 at the latest. We have asked for registrations by tomorrow but you know as well as I do that this is not a hard and fast deadline.
