DUTIES
The System Administrator for NcompasS, the DRA/MultiLIS Integrated Library System managed by the Provincial Library for member libraries, is responsible for ensuring system availability on a 24x7 basis and for providing support for software and server problems and for EDnet connectivity during library opening hours. You will manage the configuration, performance, and capacity of the Provincial Library servers (including a UNIX based IBM RS6000 and Digital Windows NT servers supporting the bibliographic database and web library catalogues), and attached applications such as Listserv list server, Exim E-mail server, SSH secure telnet server, FTP server, and Apache web server. You will ensure the data integrity of the NcompasS multi-bank/multi-database environment by managing all extraction, conversion and uploading processes and implementing solutions to problems; write custom programs and develop reports to meet the needs of NcompasS members; field problems from client libraries; and liaise with vendor database support. As well, you will ensure efficient operation of the building LAN by monitoring daily back-ups and performance.

QUALIFICATIONS
B.Sc. in Computer Science, graduation from a recognized data processing course with a minimum of one year related experience, or an acceptable equivalent. Demonstrated knowledge of computer hardware, software and peripherals; computer architecture, operating systems, database design and interfacing; programming and scripting languages (including C, Javascript, Unix shell scripts, and awk); and networking including LANs, WANs and TCP/IP. Proficiency with Unix system administration and knowledge of Windows NT system and Novell LAN administration is required. Effective written and oral communication skills, including the ability to convey technical issues in non-technical language; a high degree of initiative and judgement; and the ability to work well independently and participate effectively as part of the automation team are required. You will recommend and implement system improvements and participate in planning and preparing for successful migration to new library management software within the next two years. Knowledge of library operations, and experience with integrated library systems, MARC record data standard, and Z39.50 protocol is highly desirable, with knowledge of DRA/MultiLIS a definite asset.
