Coordinator, Digital Image Archive Project

The Nova Scotia College of Art and Design invites applications from qualified individuals for a 6-month term position as Coordinator of the Digital Image Archive Project. The term of the position is from June to December 2002.

The purpose of the project is to create a digital image database for the College’s collection of slides of student, faculty and visiting artists’ work, as well as works from the College’s Permanent Collection. The Coordinator will be responsible for all aspects of the project, from researching and deciding on the appropriate technology for scanning and recording the images to developing the database infrastructure.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will be a recent graduate in Master in Library Science with a strong emphasis on computer systems, database management, and web design. S/he may also be a graduate of a Computer Science or Information Technology program. Strong computer skills and knowledge of digital technology are mandatory.

A major part of the project consists of developing the database with an accompanying on-line catalogue, incorporating multiple search options. Thorough knowledge of database design and construction will be necessary requirements. The ideal candidate will also have some understanding of graphic design and visual communication.

The Coordinator will be working in cooperation with a number of individuals throughout the College and will need to be able to balance priorities and consider differing needs. S/he will be able to work independently with a minimum of supervision; will be able to coordinate his/her own work schedule, meet deadlines, make reports, and communicate well with all participants in the project.

The Digital Image Archive Project is funded under the Young Canada Works in Science and Technology Program. Candidates must be under the age of 30 and must not have been previously hired under another internship program that is funded under the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy. The salary is $12.00 per hour for 26 weeks with a projected start date of 24 June 2002.
