For Immediate Release
May 6, 2002

President Margaret Law is pleased to announce the appointment of a
Search Committee of CLA members to assist in the selection of the
Executive Director of the Canadian Library Association (CLA). The Search
Committee will work with Association Resource Centre (ARC), Canada's
pre-eminent consulting resource to not-for-profit organizations. ARC
provides a range of services relating to the needs of associations
including executive recruitment. ARC senior partners worked extensively
with the Canadian library community during the Commission on the Future
of the CLA. Jack Shand, Managing Partner, will be the principal in this
assignment, assisted by ARC partner Ken Thacker.

The members of the Search Committee represent the breadth and depth of
CLA membership in different types of libraries across Canada. Marnie
Swanson, a past president of CLA and the University Librarian at the
University of Victoria, will chair the committee. The five other members
are: Donna Bourne-Tyson, Systems Manager/Reference and AV, North Bay
Public Library and Secretary-Treasurer of CAPL; Claudette Cloutier,
Manager, Gallagher Library of Geology and Geophysics, University of
Calgary, and a former President of CASLIS; Michael Colborne, Coordinator
of User Services, Nova Scotia Provincial Library and a member of the CLA
Executive Council; Michael Ridley, Chief Librarian of the University of
Guelph and Past President Ontario Library Association (OLA); and Steve
Salmons, CEO of Windsor Public Library.

The process for identifying, recruiting and selecting the Executive
Director, approved by the Executive Council, will begin immediately. It
is hoped that the process can be completed by the end of June. There
will be communications from the Search Committee, as it makes progress
in this important task. The Executive Council wishes to thank the
members of the Search Committee for assuming this responsibility. If
members of the library community have suggestions, they are invited to
forward the names of potential candidates to Association Resource Centre
by e-mailing Jack Shand in confidence at
