Here's another possibility: Katie Watson and Mary Mahowald, "Honoring
Gender-based Patient Requests for Obstetricians: Ethical Imperative or
Employment Discrimination?" Journal of Women's Health, Sept. 1999.

I'm afraid I don't have the full references handy, but here are a couple
of things to follow up on for examples:

In the late 1980's-early 90's a female med student at Georgetown Univ.
(Washington DC) filed a lawsuit against the medical school for refusing to
allow her to do the urology/proctology clinical residency component. The
reason was that male patients would be uncomfortable w/ a female physician,
but male students were of course allowed to participate in gynaecology
exams.

There is an article in the Canadian Medical Assn Journal from around
1995-97 (?) of a survey of how many female physicians report being sexually
harrassed by patients as well as colleagues.

  good luck!
  Laura

I am looking for articles dealing with sexism within the medical
profession. Can anybody think of any papers on this issue offhand? I will
do a search, but I was wondering if anybody remembered any good articles or
chapters.

    Thanks,
