Carl Dair made this film right at the end of the era of metal type capturing on film the first 500 years of type making, from scribal written-letters to the more formal carved letterforms we use today. The rare footage documenting for history the last master punch cutter (not a reenactment) making a piece of metal type is so important for Canadians and for the world.
Dair was also the Canadian designer who designed Canada's first typeface, Cartier (named after the explorer) in 1967.
