The Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine is pleased to announce the Penn Fellowship in Advanced Biomedical Ethics, which is currently recruiting its third class of postdoctoral fellows. The two-year Penn Fellowship, which we initiated in the fall of 2013, is a leading interdisciplinary training program for young scholars committed to pursuing academic careers in bioethics and related disciplines. Individuals who have completed their doctoral degrees (PhD or equivalent, JD, MD) or who will have their degrees in hand by May 2015 are invited to apply. We particularly welcome applications from outstanding feminist scholars seeking to pursue a career in bioethics. Up to four fellows per year will be admitted into the program.
The rigorous fellowship training program will consist of: 1) independent research under the mentorship of a Department faculty member; 2) completion of a two-year Master of Science in Medical Ethics (MSME) or a one-year Master of Bioethics (MBe) degree, if appropriate based on the applicant’s career plans and past training; 3) participation in departmental seminars; and 4) participation in ethics committees, ethics consult services, and institutional review boards. Fellows will present their work in local, regional and national forums and will be expected to publish at least two papers in high-impact journals by the completion of their training.
The Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy has funding to support accepted fellows. Additional information about the Fellowship Program, along with application requirements and a link to the form, is available at http://medicalethics.med.upenn.edu/education/penn-fellowship-in-advanced-biomedical-ethics.
Please consider applying for this fellowship if it is consistent with your career goals. Also, please distribute this announcement to colleagues and students, and strongly encourage any for whom it might be a good fit to apply. As in prior years, we expect that the application process will be highly competitive. Please note that applications are due by January 2, 2015.
Do not hesitate to contact me if I can provide any additional information about the Fellowship.
Sincerely,
Steven Joffe, MD, MPH
