Duties:
Nova Scotia Provincial Library is seeking a Library Assistant 1-2 to be
part of a team providing centralized cataloguing to an external client
base of regional public libraries and other client libraries. The
successful candidate must be able to work quickly and consistently with
a minimum of supervision in a web-based cataloguing environment,
producing high quality MARC cataloguing records for a variety of
material formats using AACR2 Rev. cataloguing standards, LC Subject
Headings, Canadian Subject Headings, Répertoire de vedettes-matière and
Dewey Decimal Classification. Cataloguers perform their duties using
SirsiDynix's Symphony integrated library system. Responsibilities
include selecting bibliographic and authority records from a variety of
commercial and non commercial sources using Z39.50 software, editing
downloaded records to meet local standards, and creating some original
records. The successful candidate will be a strong and flexible team
player with an interest in supporting public libraries.
Qualifications:
Grade 12 plus completion of a Library Technician Program. Preference
will be given to candidates with Grade 12 plus completion of a Library
Technician Program plus 2 years related experience after course
completion or an acceptable equivalent combination of training and
experience. Demonstrated experience with MARC coding, AACR2 Rev., Dewey
Decimal Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings,
bibliographic record structures, online searching of bibliographic
utilities such as AG Canada (Agent), and cataloguing using an integrated
library system is required. Candidates must demonstrate excellent data
entry and computer skills with exceptional attention to detail.
Candidates must have good written and verbal communication skills. The
ability to work with minimum supervision is required. Reading knowledge
of French is an asset.
Classification: TE 10-13
Salary Range: $32,176 - $37,857
