WINTER INSTITUTE ON STATISTICAL LITERACY FOR LIBRARIANS (WISLL)

The University of Alberta Library will be hosting its fourth Winter Institute on Statistical Literacy for Librarians from February 17-19, 2010.  This training event will provide strategies and skills for finding, evaluating and retrieving online published statistics and will be useful to information professionals working in academic, public and special libraries.

This workshop will not provide instruction about how to do data analysis, although some examples will include the use of data to demonstrate how statistics are produced.

The instructional focus is on making electronic online statistics more accessible as information to librarians and their patrons. The topics to be covered include:

- A framework for thinking about published statistics
- How statistics are derived from data
- The importance of definitions, standards and classifications to understanding statistics
- Using metadata to find statistics
- Knowing how to interpret statistical metadata
- Evaluating statistical sources
- Choosing official and non-official statistical sources
- Tools and strategies for locating statistics
- How to cite online statistics
- Geographical and spatial representation of statistics
- Addressing the challenge of finding statistics for small geographic areas

The conference is restricted to 30 participants on a first-come, first-serve basis. The registration fee is $250, which includes continental breakfast, coffee breaks and lunch.
Because of the limited enrollment, we ask people to pay their registration fee in advance to hold a seat.

Because of limited enrollment, participants in previous workshops are kindly asked not to register in 2010. We appreciate your cooperation.
