Pre-Conference Workshops:
APLA is hosting two all-day pre-conference workshops, an opportunity to
spend an entire day in an intensive session with experts.  Space is
limited and you should register as soon as possible to avoid
disappointment.  The workshops are being held Wednesday, June 10 from
8:30 am - 4:30 pm and the cost to attend is $75.00.   Lunch and
refreshments will be provided.

Workshop on Writing:  Reaching Your Intended Audience
with Margie Clow Bohan, Lyn Bennett and Paul Hardman

This day-long workshop offers attendees an opportunity to become more
aware of their writing practices and to strengthen their professional
writing skills. Presented by three Dalhousie faculty and staff members,
the sessions feature a hands-on approach to learning to write
effectively. Three areas of concern will be addressed: the use of easily
understood language (often called the plain language approach), writing
for the web, and writing for diverse populations.

Readers' Advisory:  RA in a Day
Sponsored by the Canadian Association of Public Libraries and presented
by
Duncan Smith, Sharron Smith, Heidi Hallett, Kristina Parlee, Denis
Cunningham, Sarah Wenning, David Hansen, Maureen Collier and Laurel
Tarulli   

The task of helping a reader to discover their next great read can be a
challenge for many reasons.  Today’s reader is looking for meaningful
suggestions but usually within very limited time constraints and so the
harried readers’ advisor may come to see the question, “What should
I read next?” as a daunting one.
 
Co-sponsored by the Nova Scotia Provincial Library and the Canadian
Association of Public Libraries this day-long workshop focuses on
Readers’ Advisory skills and techniques to help both new and seasoned
staff.  During the day recognized experts in the field of Readers’
Advisory as well as public library staff will share their tips, tricks
and successes.  By the end of the day attendees will have gained new
perspectives in RA as well as a heightened appreciation for readers and
the value of our service to them.
 
For three years running RA in a Day has been run successfully by
Sharron Smith of the Ontario Public Library Association’s Readers’
Advisory Committee.  For the first time, she is taking it on the road
and adding an east coast twist.
