UNB´s Gerard V. La Forest Law Library invites applications from
qualified candidates for the position of Reference/Instruction
Librarian. This tenure- track position is expected to be filled at
the rank of Librarian II. Anticipated start date is October 2008.
UNB-Fredericton, located in New Brunswick´s beautiful capital city, is
a comprehensive university offering a variety of degree programs, many
of which include a law-related component. UNB´s Faculty of Law has
been ranked consistently as one of the country´s best undergraduate
law (LLB) programs. The Gerard V. La Forest Law Library serves the
legal information needs of law students, faculty and staff as well as
the law-related requirements of the larger UNB community and the
adjacent St. Thomas University. The law library is integrated fully
into the daily life of the law school and is a highly respected
partner, collaborator and innovator in the educational experience of
our law students and in the teaching and research roles of our law
Reporting to the Head Law Librarian, the Reference/Instruction
Librarian is responsible for providing legal reference and instruction
services to law library users and for supervising the provision of
information services by other library staff. The successful applicant
will also take an active and collegial role in library management.
Provides legal reference services on a daily basis, and supervises the
provision of information services by other library staff.
Organizes, prepares, and delivers training programs for students and
faculty (both law and non-law) in the use of legal information
resources in all formats.
Supervises the library´s document delivery/ILLO service and handles
complex requests referred by other ILLO staff.
Contributes to the evaluation and selection of legal information
resources in print and electronic formats.
Recruits, hires, and participates in the training of student library
Participates in library planning, particularly with respect to user
services, and in periodic surveys of user satisfaction.
Actively promotes the library and its services within the Faculty of
Law and to the larger UNB/STU community, which includes organizing
special projects and events.
Maintains the law library´s website with responsibility for its
organization and content.
Serves on appropriate law faculty, campus, and library-related
Contributes actively to law librarianship through professional
affiliations, publishing, and collegial networking.
The incumbent has traditionally taught the Legal Research component of
the Faculty of Law´s compulsory first year Fundamentals of Advocacy
course on a stipendary basis. It is anticipated that the successful
applicant would begin this teaching commitment in September 2009.
MLS degree or equivalent from an ALA accredited institution is
required PLUS: three years´ relevant experience in an academic law
library; OR an LLB degree; OR an equivalent combination of education
and experience. Applicants must have an excellent knowledge of
Canadian print and electronic legal resources, as well as teaching or
training experience. The successful candidate will be an energetic
team player with a collaborative, service-oriented approach to
academic law librarianship. Excellent organizational skills, as well
as excellent written and oral communication skills in English, are
