It's that time of year again when we encourage you to participate in the Professional Partnering Program with students from Dalhousie's School of Information Management. One of the interesting things about the program is that most of the professionals who participate once, sign up again the next year. I think that is a statement about the value of the program to both student and professional partners.

Dear Librarians and Information Professionals:
For the past five years, the Professional Partnering Program (PPP), sponsored by the Canadian Library Association Student Chapter at Dalhousie's School of Information Management, has provided an opportunity for library practitioners and information managers from a variety of organizations to share their experiences with students enrolled in the Masters of Library and Information Studies program at Dalhousie. Since its inception, well over one hundred students have participated in the program and gained valuable insights into the working life of practicing librarians, archivists and information professionals.
Participating professionals are matched with students with similar interests for the duration of the academic year. The program is very flexible, with each pair deciding on their own activities. In previous
years these activities have included resume and job hunting advice, meeting for coffee, tours of libraries and workplaces, and attending meetings and workshops together. There will be a reception to start the program and to give partners an opportunity to meet, and also a wind up event at the end of the winter term.
Spending time with students is a rewarding experience. It is always useful to keep in touch with what new librarians and information managers are thinking and learning, and to see the attitudes and interests they will be bringing to the workplace.
In the 2006-2007 academic year, the Professional Partnering Program paired 55 Dalhousie MLIS students with professionals working in both traditional and non-traditional workplaces and received overwhelmingly positive feedback.
