The Nova Scotia Provincial Library will be hosting an audio conference
on *The Library's Contribution to Your Community* with Jim
Morgenstern on March 26th. The Resource Manual and training program of
the same name was developed by the Southern Ontario Library Service to
help libraries link their services to the broader social and economic
priorities of funders. This tool is a practical combination of social
marketing, advocacy, planning and performance measurement. The session
will address the problem that libraries face in making a case for
support from their funders. Working from key community issues, the
manual guides you through the development of your Contribution Strategy
from selecting relevant library outcomes from among six contributions
and twenty benefits, through collecting and interpreting your data and
constructing your argument. The result is a cogent description of your
library's contributions specifically linked to issues of high importance
in your community, and creating a persuasive case for support.
The Benefits
- An understanding of the problems facing your library as you try to
make a case for support to your funders.
- The keys to success in making a persuasive case for your library.
- How to use *The Library's Contribution to Your Community*.
Who Should Participate?
Public library CEOs and public library trustees.
The session will focus on the keys to success in making your case to
your funders:
- Linking your strategy to issues in your community.
- Having a clear and relevant mission and a plan to achieve it.
- Repositioning the library in the community.
- Collecting useful and persuasive information with available
resources.
- Focusing the *The Library's Contribution to Your Community*
strategy on appropriate benefits.
Presenter
Mr. Morgenstern is a Principal of dmA Planning & Management Services
where he has a wide range of responsibilities for municipal management
and planning services. He has undergraduate and graduate degrees in
Urban Studies and Planning from York University. Jim was the principal
author of *The Library's Contribution to Your Community* Resource
Manual. As a consultant in private practice, Jim has worked extensively
with libraries on strategic plans, operational reviews and needs
assessments. He has a broad background in all areas of library planning
and management that are addressed in the Manual - including performance
measures, survey research, operational plans, and communications. He is
also familiar with efforts in other jurisdictions to develop performance
measures for libraries and has advised libraries on their use for
managing service delivery.
