MATTHEWS, Frederick White - Passed away peacefully in his home in Halifax on
Tuesday, February 20, 2007, at the age of 91. He was the beloved husband of
Phyllis (Mcleod) and caring father to Frederick John, Toronto; Douglas,
Dalhousie, N.B.; David, Calgary; Gretchen, Townsend, Mass., and devoted
grandfather to Alicia and Tyler, Jamie and Christopher, and Frederick L. He
was born the son of Rev. F.R. Matthews and Bertha Elizabeth (Maddock) in
Carbonear, N.L. on November 27, 1915. He was predeceased by his sisters,
Marion, Gwen and Emma. In 1936 he received a B.Sc. degree in Honours
Chemistry from Mount Allison University in Sackville, N.B., and then a Ph.D.
in Physical Chemistry from McGill University in Montreal, Que. He worked in
Montreal as a research chemist with Canadian Industries Limited (CIL) from
1941-1959. His research in crystallography involved the early use of
computer technology and data processing. He became manager of the
Information Services Section of CIL from 1959-1968. In 1969 he moved to
London, England for three years, where he worked for Imperial Chemical
Industries (ICI). Returning to Canada in 1972, he became Professor of
Information Science at Dalhousie University School of Library Services in
Halifax, and retired in 1984. When living in Halifax, his wide interests
included the Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia, serving a term as president, and
the Royal Nova Scotia Historical Society. He was also a member of the
Halifax Curling Club, the Halifax Wine Circle, and the Atlantic Woodworkers'
Association. His many skills included home renovation, the construction of a
replica seventeenth century wooden press for the Dawson Print Shop at
Dalhousie University, as well as a lifetime of other woodworking projects.
He was an enthusiastic bookbinder and also made bookbinding equipment. He
served as an elder at St. Andrew's United Church. Always an avid gardener,
he enjoyed learning about nature and the world around him. The family wishes
to thank all the Red Cross caregivers and friends and family members who
have been so kind and supportive over these last years. A memorial service
will be held on Friday, March 9, at 11 a.m. in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666
Windsor St., Halifax, Rev. Arlene Riches officiating. In lieu of flowers,
