Web site management can be a daunting task, especially for busy, short-staffed libraries. This course will help library Web managers and Web teams get a handle on what's involved in Web site management.
This six week program will cover the basics of managing, designing, and improving a library Web site. Topics will include Web site management structure, software used in maintaining Web sites, basic design and content tips, and emerging Web site trends.

State of the Art: Federated Searching
with Jeff Wisniewski and Frank Cervone - 1 hour WEBCAST
Federated searching tools are being implemented by libraries of all types, but the issues related to implementation are complex. In this tech talk, you'll learn about the best practices of libraries implementing federated searching as well as recent research on how federated search interfaces can be made more usable. Find out what works and what doesn't in relationship to placement of federated search boxes, display of search results, and design decisions in creating topical groups.
Monday, Jan. 15th, 6-week On-line Course
Supervisory Skills for Library Staff
with Cheryl Stenström
For first-time supervisors and staff new to the library workplace, supervising and leading can be a daunting task. In addition to working with customers, supervisors need to deal with administration, staff motivation and performance management. Based on the hugely popular Supervisory Skills for Library Staff course in BC's Ministry of Education's Community Library Training Program, this six week online course is a mix of practical exercises and management theory and will give anyone new to libraries or those needing a refresher a chance to strengthen their skills as a team leader.
Monday, Jan. 22nd, 6-week On-line Course
Consumer Health and Medical Resources on the Web
with Susan Murray
A 2004 Canadian Internet Project survey of 3,000 Canadians found that:
* 59 minutes per week was spent reading or searching for medical information
* 54.4% of respondents searched for health information
While the Internet is the preferred source for health-related questions, search engines don't necessarily provide the best links to quality health resources on the Web. This course reviews the top tools to help you quickly find consumer health and medical electronic resources on the Web. Provides an introduction to each topic area with annotated, extensive examples of the best sites.
Begins Monday, Jan. 29th-6-week On-Line Course
Library Services to Persons with Disabilities
with Cheryl Stenström
At any given time in our libraries, more than one in ten customers has a disability and the statistic rises to almost one in two for those aged sixty-five and over. Some disabilities are obvious -- most are invisible by library staff. While understanding the characteristics of disabilities is important, developing the attitudes, skills and awareness necessary to serve individuals with disabilities is even more critical. This six week online course is for anyone who would like to ensure that all their customers receive high-quality service and that every one of their interactions is enjoyable.
