ABSTRACT
Publicly-funded libraries are critical contributors to sustainable
communities. However, those in municipal government do not necessarily
recognize this. In the late 1990's, Edmonton Public Library had one of the
lowest per capita support rates in the country. Branches were in various
states of disrepair and the budget was not tied to inflation. In 2006,
Edmonton's library system enjoys increased monetary resources, has added
three new branches with a fourth planned in 2007, has spent over $30 million
renovating and refurbishing its current branches, and has doubled the
spending on collections. Planned, deliberate, and sustained advocacy
effectively convinced funders of the importance of libraries to communities.
