Queen's University Library requires an innovative public services
librarian to lead the provision of reference services and legal
research instruction for the Law Library. Reporting to and in
consultation with the Head, Law Library, the Public Services
Librarian provides reference services and instruction to assist law
students, members of the Faculty of Law and other patrons in the use
of the Law collections and legal resources, both print and
electronic. The librarian plays a leading role in providing classes
and tutorials in legal research tools and methods, as well as
overseeing Law Library web pages and web-based programmes and
services. The librarian collaborates in the development of
collections and public services, and supervises some staff and
services within the unit. The librarian consults and collaborates
with other staff across the Queen's University Library system and
promotes the vision of a team-based learning organization.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED: An ALA accredited MLIS or equivalent, completed or nearing
completion. Familiarity with legal research techniques and the major
legal print and electronic research resources (both pay and free). A
high level of computer literacy; a strong commitment to public
service; superior communication skills, teaching skills, creativity,
flexibility and initiative; and ability to work well in a team-based
and self-directed environment.
PREFERRED: An LLB or JD. Some public service, some teaching
experience, familiarity with web page production, and work experience
in a law library.
ENVIRONMENT:
Queen's University Library comprises five major libraries, one of
which is the William R. Lederman Law Library. Queen's University
Library serves a user community of approximately 18,000 students and
800 faculty with research collections exceeding 7 million items,
access to about 18,000 electronic journals and 400 databases, a staff
of 160 and a budget exceeding $17 million. A team-based organization
based on the goals of the learning organization was introduced in
1999 to encourage innovation and flexibility in meeting the service
needs of the Library's users. The Library is a member of the
Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Canadian Association
of Research Libraries (CARL)
The William R. Lederman Law Library serves the teaching and research
needs of the Faculty of Law and the University in general. The
Faculty of Law consists of approximately 488 FTE undergraduate
students, 12 FTE Masters students, and 23 FTE faculty. The Law
Library has approximately 145,000 volumes, a wide range of electronic
resources, 9.3 FTE staff working in a unionized environment, and
houses the faculty's student computer facility. The Library supports
and initiates the extensive use of computer technology, instructional
services, consultative collection development, and resource sharing
to provide information to patrons. Services are provided in the
context of a consultative, team-based organization model. In addition
to its primary clientele, the Law Library also serves as a legal
information resource for the students and staff of Queen's University
and the local legal community.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Librarians are members of the Faculty
Association and terms and conditions of work are governed by the
collective agreement between the Association and the University which

rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
(Minimum salary for a General Librarian is $44,715; minimum salary
for an Assistant Librarian is $50,304.) This is a continuing track appointment.
