The task of helping a reader to discover their next great read can be a
challenge for many reasons. Today's reader is looking for meaningful
suggestions but usually within very limited time constraints and so the
harried readers' advisor may come to see the question, "What should I
read next?" as a daunting one.

OPLA's Readers' Advisory Committee presents a day-long conference
focusing on Readers' Advisory skills and techniques to help both new and
seasoned staff meet this challenge. During this day long workshop,
recognized experts in the field of readers' advisory as well as staff
from a number of public library systems will share their tips, tricks
and successes. By the end of the day attendees will have gain new
perspectives in RA as well as a heightened appreciation for serving
readers and the power and value of story.

About the presenters.....
Catherine Ross is Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Information and
Media Studies, University of Western Ontario. She has published widely
in journals and written a number of books, including Alice Munro, A
Double Life, co-authored books for library professionals - most recently
Reading Matters (Libraries Unlimited, 2005) and non-fiction books for
children. Her work has earned her a number of honours including the
Jesse Shera Award for Research from the American Library Association
(1995) and the Science Writers of Canada Award (1996) for the children's
best science book.
Dr. Robert Burgin is Associate Dean and Professor at North Carolina
University's School of Library and Information Sciences. He edited
Nonfiction Readers' Advisory (Libraries Unlimited, 2004) and co-edited
both The Real Story: A Guide to Nonfiction Reading Interests (Libraries
Unlimited, 2006) and The Readers' Advisory Companion (Libraries
Unlimited, 2002). He is currently President of the North Carolina
Library Association.
Sharron Smith is the Readers' Advisory Librarian at the Kitchener
Public Library and a popular RA trainer and conference speaker. She is
the co-author of Canadian Fiction: a guide to reading interests
(Libraries Unlimited, 2005).
Mary Jane Maffini is a "lapsed" librarian, former co-owner of a Mystery
fiction bookstore in Ottawa, author of two mystery series (Camilla
MacPhee mystery series and the Fiona Silk mystery series) and winner of
the Arthur Ellis award for short crime fiction. She is a former
president of Crime Writers of Canada and current chair of the CWC's
awareness committee and a frequent speaker on Canadian crime fiction,
the mystery scene and writing.
