                                          Queen's University Library
                                   Head, Engineering and Science Library
                    Continuing Track Appointment: Available Immediately

Description: Queen's University Library has an exciting opportunity
for an energetic, innovative and experienced librarian to provide
leadership and direction for the Engineering and Science
Library. The Engineering and Science Library serves the teaching and
research needs of the undergraduates, graduates, faculty and
researchers in the Faculty of Applied Science and science departments
lodged within the Faculty of Arts and Science. Reporting to an
Associate University Librarian, the Head provides leadership and
direction in the planning, development, promotion, delivery and
evaluation of high quality library services including access
services, collection development, liaison with the university
community, document delivery, instruction and reference services. The
Head evaluates and implements new approaches to services in a rapidly
changing library environment, fostering a collegial and productive
environment for staff, and ensuring that user-centred services meet
the constantly evolving needs of a diverse educational and research
user community. The Head consults and collaborates with other units
within Queen's University Library and promotes the vision of a
team-based learning organization.

Qualifications: Required: An ALA accredited MLIS or equivalent with a
strong academic background, preferably in the pure or applied
sciences; substantial relevant professional experience with a record
of successful administrative and management experience, preferably
in an academic research library setting; demonstrated facilitative
and innovative leadership abilities; strong analytical and
problem-solving skills; excellent interpersonal and communication
skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously
with all staff members in a collaborative team-based environment;
ability to mentor and motivate staff in an environment that supports
the goals of a learning organization; demonstrated strong background
in the planning, development, promotion, delivery and evaluation
of programs and services; an understanding of engineering and
science research, scholarship, and pedagogy; experience in
successfully leading collaborative efforts to enhance user services;
a broad knowledge of emerging information technologies and the
ability to evaluate and implement new approaches and to respond
creatively to rapidly changing academic, library, and research environments.

Environment: The Engineering and Science Library is housed in
renovated space in the historic Douglas Library, is staffed by 5
librarians and 9.42 FTE library technicians and is open 95 hours per
week for most of the year. The Library is the primary resource for
the pure and applied science departments. Librarians provide
reference, instruction and research services and work collaboratively
with faculty to design and deliver course and assignment specific
instruction for undergraduates in information literacy skills and
specialized services required by graduate students, faculty members
and interdisciplinary researchers. These services are offered from
the Engineering and Science Library and increasingly through
librarian presence in academic departments and the Faculty of Applied
Science's Integrated Learning Centre.

Queen's University Library comprises five major libraries in
well-equipped facilities. It serves a user community of
approximately 18,000 students and 800 faculty with research
collections exceeding 7 million items, more than 16,000 electronic
journals and 400 databases; a staff of 160; and a budget exceeding
$17 million. A team-based organization based on the goals of a
learning organization was introduced in 1999 to encourage innovation
and flexibility in meeting the service needs of the Library's users.

Salary and Benefits: The academic staff at Queen's University are
governed by a Collective Agreement between the Queen's University
Faculty Association (QUFA) and the University, which is posted at
<http://www/queensu.ca/qufa/>http://www/queensu.ca/qufa/. This
position will be filled at the rank of Associate Librarian or
Librarian. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications
and experience. (Minimum salary for the rank of Associate Librarian
is $58,688; minimum salary for the rank of Librarian is $69,867).
This is a five-year renewable appointment as Head, Engineering and
Science Library and a continuing track librarian appointment. The
position carries an annual administrative stipend of $2,500.00.

The University invites applications from all qualified
individuals. Queen's University is committed to employment equity
and diversity in the workplace and welcomes applications from women,
visible minorities, aboriginal people, persons with disabilities, and
persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity. All qualified
candidates are encouraged to apply, however, Canadian citizens and
permanent residents will be given priority.
