Nova Scotia Department of Education Library requires a student employee to
work at the Departmental Library, located at 2021 Brunswick Street,
Halifax
The library currently is storing many types of documents (archival,
curriculum resources, assorted pamphlets, reports) that must be sorted,
catalogued and returned to a storage space, or shelved in the library.
Duties:
Under the direct supervision of the Departmental Librarian and the Library
Technician, the student is required to perform the following tasks:
Primary Duties:
Items must be organized and made accessible to the departmental staff,
teachers and interested members of the public.
* take inventory of materials that must be added to the collection
* sort materials by collection type
* shift and/or reorganize currently shelved materials to accommodate new
materials
* add or update item records in database
* shelf read library collections including journal collection
* discard library materials based on established criteria
* complete original and copy cataloguing of government reports and other
books
* catalogue and process items for addition to collection(s)
* label and shelve materials
* remove delisted materials from the collection
* add or update records in database
* sort, package and distribute delisted items
Other Duties:
Under the direction of the Library Technician:
* troubleshoot problems with database
* assist with daily tasks (pick up mail, check in materials)
* process library materials (affixing spine labels, book pockets and
cards)
* send overdue notices to patrons (items for ALR collection only)
Qualifications:
* currently enrolled in a Library and Information Technology program OR a
recent graduate (2005/06) of the program OR a student with some previous
library experience who is enrolled in the Library Technician's program for
September 2006
* under the age of 30 years old, age 29 or under as of January 1, 2006
* knowledge of DB/TextWorks is an asset
* knowledge of and experience with computer programs: WordPerfect, email,
web browsers
* knowledge of and experience with basic database structure and indexing
* familiarity with cataloguing rules
* accurate data entry and keyboarding skills
* strong organizational, project management and communication skills
* previous library experience and a working knowledge of written French
would be assets
* ability to lift and bend to move boxes or shelve library materials
