Title: Administrator, Adult and Outreach Services
Classification: Librarian III
Salary: $ 40,434 per annum (step 1 on a 5-step scale)

The Colchester-East Hants Public Library in Nova Scotia invites
applications for the full time (35 hours/week), ongoing position of
Administrator, Adult and Outreach Services.
The successful applicant will be joining a dedicated and dynamic team of 55
(33 f.t.e.), serving a population of over 74,000 in four municipalities,
through five branches and a variety of outreach services. The main branch
and headquarters are in Truro, whose central location gives access to an
affordable town or rural lifestyle; Halifax, Atlantic Canada's largest
city, is only an hour's drive away.
Job Summary
Under the direction of the Library Director, coordinates library services
to the small towns, villages, and rural areas of the region; coordinates
the development of the adult circulating collection; oversees reference,
request, and interlibrary loan services; participates in library service
promotion and programming.
Duties/Tasks
Directs branch library service in Elmsdale, Mount Uniacke, Stewiacke, and
Tatamagouche; includes working with branch staff, fellow administrators,
and others to assess community needs and improve collections and services
as appropriate and feasible.
Coordinates outreach services (i.e. books by mail, home reader, and
satellite library services); includes working regularly at the 3 satellite
sites (each located in a rural school) and with outreach services staff,
fellow administrators, and others to assess community needs and improve
collections and services where needed and feasible.
Develops and maintains the adult circulating collection; includes working
with fellow administrators in assessing vendors and procedures, and
effecting change where needed and feasible.
Oversees the work of the part time Reference Services Librarian, who
develops and maintains reference services and supervises the request and
interlibrary loan services for the region; also, in partnership with the
Reference Services Librarian, oversees the work of the Adult Services
Assistant ,whose duties include preparing the Truro branch's circulation
and adult information desk schedules and coordinating the day-to-day
operations of the adult services reading room.
Works in the Truro branch on the adult information desk at least one shift
a week and is part of the Saturday and Sunday rotation; weekend shifts may
involve helping out on the circulation desk.
Participates in promoting library services; includes writing book reviews
for local newspapers, providing library orientation classes and tours, and
working with others to develop promotional materials, programs, and
outreach activities.
Participates in problem-solving, decision-making, long- and short-range
planning, personnel selection, training and supervision, and budget
preparation and monitoring as a member of the library's management team.
Maintains accurate statistical and financial data as required and provides
timely reports to the Library Director.
Attends the meetings of the Colchester-East Hants Public Library Board and
acts as a resource person pertaining to adult and outreach services.
Represents the library on local, regional, and provincial committees,
relating to adult and/or rural/small branch library services; works with
colleagues to develop community partnerships to advance library services in
the region.
Keeps informed of current library trends by reading, conference attendance,
and communication with others in the library community; recommends changes
in policies and procedures as a result and as appropriate.
Carries out special projects and performs other related tasks as requested.

Education, Experience and Abilities Required
Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school or recognized equivalent
3 years' experience in a professional librarian position (preferably in a
public library), an asset
Strong client service orientation
Leadership, management, and communications skills that foster teamwork and
staff development
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
Research, analytical, and organizational skills
Supervisory skills
Keyboarding skills (40wpm), computer skills, and a keen interest in
mastering new technologies and staying current
Experience living and/or working in a rural setting an asset
Ability to adapt to changing needs of clientele and procedures
Ability to deal tactfully, patiently and courteously with staff and public
Ability to carry, push, and pull heavy loads
Ability and willingness to work evening and weekend shifts on a regular
rotation
Valid driver's licence and ability and willingness to drive library vehicles
