Ontario Library Service – North (OLS-N) is an unscheduled agency mandated under the Public Libraries Act, 1990, s.34 and established under the Corporations Act. It is mandated to deliver programs and services on behalf of the Minister to libraries across Northern Ontario. We are looking for a committed individual to join our library development team.
Ontario Library Service – North (OLS-North) contributes to strong northern libraries that effectively promote the core values of public library services including literacy, access to information and life-long learning. Through collection development, training, education, consulting services and technical support we ensure libraries can provide quality services. OLS-North is recognized as a leader in all aspects of library service. We understand the changing needs of libraries and work with library boards and staff to build a strong and stable foundation for service delivery. We build partnerships among libraries and between libraries and other public and private sector organizations. We encourage libraries in the north to adopt new and higher standards and we assist them to achieve these standards.
Ontario Library Service – North (OLS-N) invites applications for the full time position (70 hrs. biweekly) of Library Development Advisor – First Nations. This is a bargaining Unit position (CUPE Local 4705). Working from our Sudbury office, this position is responsible for helping First Nation Public Libraries across Northern Ontario to reach their full potential by giving them access to professional knowledge, experience, advice and documents. As part of the library development team, the position will provide instruction through on site visits, telephone or electronic means and conduct workshops, seminars and other group educational activities. This position makes recommendations to the CEO regarding disbursements of the Salary Subsidy Grant to First Nation Libraries throughout the province. This is a unionized position.
In addition to the requirements listed below this position requires knowledge of First Nation communities and governance and the ability to relate to needs of First Nations clientele.
1. Master of Library Science degree or equivalent.
2. One to two years relevant experience or equivalent.
3. Ability to work independently and develop procedures within a defined policy area.
4. General knowledge of relevant library software, knowledge of office software and good keyboarding skills (30wpm).
5. Superior human relations skills.
6. Ability and willingness to travel frequently by automobile or commercial aircraft.
7. Must possess a valid class G driver’s license.
