OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. is a nonprofit, membership,
computer library service and research organization dedicated to the
public purposes of furthering access to the world's information and
reducing information costs. More than 53,000 libraries in 96 countries
and territories around the world use OCLC services to locate, acquire,
catalog, lend and preserve library materials. Our Canadian operation has
an exciting new opportunity at our Winnipeg, Manitoba, location for a
Digital Technician.
Primary responsibilities include capturing and digitizing images from
books, microfilm, photographs and documents for institutions and
universities. The candidate must also perform preservation microfilming
of rare and valuable materials by operating a micrographic camera and
maintaining required production standards in order to fulfill the
preservation requirements of the library community and the outside
sector. Other responsibilities include using flatbed or planetary
scanners and viewing a variety of graphics-related software tools;
meeting daily production levels and standards to meet client deadlines;
quality assurance of digital images; and the examination of images for
completeness and quality of scan. Candidate must understand the basic
mechanics and functions of the scanners in order to troubleshoot minor
problems, and possess basic understanding of the uses of software such
as Scanfix, Image Alchemy, Debabelizer, and Photoshop. The qualified
candidate must be able to use Photoshop for touching-up images, and be
free to train one week in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Requirements include a high school diploma, along with related work
experience; previous photographic, digital or computer graphics
preferred. The selected candidate must be computer literate (Experience
in Windows 2000, NT or Windows 95 preferred), detail oriented, with the
ability to maintain concentration in a repetitive work environment, and
must posses good verbal and written communication skills, along with
legible handwriting. Candidate must be willing to work flexible/overtime
hours as required, and possess the ability to work as part of a team and
sit in a stationary position for 2 hours.
Experience in a library setting, handling a variety of materials,
Library Preservation experience and/or micrographics a plus.
