An audio conference on "Designing Effective Questionnaires: What Every Librarian Needs To Know!" will be hosted at the Nova Scotia Provincial Library on May 24th. The presenter will be Dr. Lisa M. Given, School of Library and Information Studies, University of Alberta. This session will explore strategies for effective questionnaire design, including issues related to layout, question selection, and preparation for data analysis. Related topics, such as enhancing response rates and practical tips for data management, will also be discussed. Participants will have the opportunity to critique and revise an existing questionnaire.
THE BENEFITS
Provides an overview of key design topic "do's and don'ts" from the research design texts as applied to the library context;
Includes practical examples using questionnaires that have been used in library settings across Canada;
Includes discussion time so that participants can ask questions about questionnaires they've used in the past or are currently designing.
KEY TOPICS
When to use a questionnaire and when other methods are needed;
Choosing appropriate samples and encouraging people to respond;
Paper vs. in-person vs. e-mail/Web - how to distribute questionnaires;
Design issues - how to write effective questions; layout, pre-testing, etc.
METHOD OF INSTRUCTION
One hour audio conference session supported by handouts.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Librarians working in any setting (academic, public, special libraries or other information settings) who want to learn more about designing effective questionnaires. The topic of the session will also apply to a range of content areas from the health sciences to children's services.
