AUDIO CONFERENCE ON EFFECTIVE BOARD GOVERNANCE

What constitutes effective governance? What does the research say about
high performing boards?
What are the criteria, how do you identify them, what are the
implications?  Examples of best practice are provided for trustees,
boards, chairs and CEOs in this one hour audio conference from The
Education Institute: The learning programs of the
APLA-BCLA-LAA-NSLA-OLA-SLA Partnership.  It will be hosted at the Nova
Scotia Provincial Library on March 30th and the presenter will be Ken
Haycock, Senior Partner, Ken Haycock and Associates, Vancouver.

THE BENEFITS
Participants will understand the key criteria for board effectiveness
and be able to analyze their own board functions from this perspective.
The result will be a more effective board with a clearly defined focus
on community development, higher level library planning and allocation
of resources and regular evaluation of programs and services. The board
will also have a higher profile in the community and recruit new members
based on identified needs.

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION

PRESENTER
Ken Haycock holds graduate degrees in Education, Leadership and
Library, Information Studies and Business Administration. At the
University of British Columbia, Dr. Haycock was Dean of the Faculty of
Library, Archival and Information Studies, and professor at the
University of British Columbia, teaching and conducting research in
management and leadership. The author of more than a hundred articles
and books, he has received the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal
for contributions to Canadian society. He is a past president of the
Canadian Library Association and an elected member of the Executive
Board of the American Library Association. Ken has also been a public
library trustee with the Guelph and West Vancouver Library Boards, an
elected school board trustee, and chair of the West Vancouver School
Board. He was an elected councillor in West Vancouver. He is the
founding editor of Teacher Librarian. His recent books include
Foundations for Effective School Library Media Programs, Neal Schuman
Authoritative Guide to Kids' Search Engines and Crisis in Canada's
School Libraries: the Case for Redevelopment and Reinvestment. He has
conducted a number of landmark sessions on repositioning public library
boards in community development.
