Mount Saint Vincent University invites nominations and applications
for the position of University Librarian.

undergraduate university with strong programs in arts and science,
and several professional areas. The University also offers graduate
programs in six areas.
The Library, with its total collection of 488,000 print and microform
volumes, provides a full range of services to a community of 4,400
students and 500 employees, with a staff of 4 professional librarians
and 14.5 library assistants. The Library has a mission to serve both
on-campus students and those studying from a distance. The Library
is a member of the Novanet consortium of 10 post-secondary
institutions in Nova Scotia.
As a member of the senior administrative team, the University
Librarian will report to the Vice-President (Academic) and work
closely with Deans and the Directors of Information Technology and
Distance Learning. The University Librarian will act as a
professional Librarian and will, in addition: manage all aspects of
library and archival operations, including personnel, public
services, cataloguing, collection development, facilities, and
purchasing; define and monitor Library goals and set priorities in
support of the Academic Plan; develop and administer the Library
budget; oversee the selection and integration of emerging library
technologies and services; represent MSVU to Novanet and the Council
of Atlantic University Libraries for regional resource sharing;
manage consortial agreements and licensing agreements for electronic
resources; and administer the Collective Agreements with the MSVU
Faculty Association and the NSGEU with respect to Library employees.
The successful candidate will possess an ALA-accredited MLIS or MLS
degree with a minimum of five years of increasing administrative
responsibility and success in an academic library. The successful
candidate will demonstrate excellent leadership ability in a
collegial environment, an appreciation of the needs of distance as
well as on-campus students , broad knowledge and understanding of
current issues in academic librarianship, and achievement in the
integration of emerging technologies and electronic resources with
traditional library services. The successful candidate will have a
commitment to teamwork and staff development, the ability to work
effectively with university administrators, faculty, librarians,
staff, and students, and the commitment to develop external relations
and partnerships.
The anticipated start date of this appointment is July 1, 2005.
