New Brunswick Public Library Service (NBPLS) is searching for a dynamic librarian with demonstrated enthusiasm for the mission of public libraries to manage the Smurfit-Stone Public Library in Bathurst (a city of 13,000 people). The library is part of the Chaleur Library Region.

DUTIES:  Reporting to the Regional Director, the Director is responsible for the provision of quality library service to the community and surrounding area. He or she is responsible for managing the library in accordance with provincial guidelines. As a librarian, the Director is expected to be a key support to the Regional Director in developing service in the region, in recommending and assisting in the implementation of regional and provincial programs, priorities, policies and guidelines, in taking part in regional and provincial committees, in leading special projects, in using his or her expertise to mentor and guide staff of the library region via the development of training and other activities, and in acting as substitute for other personnel as requested.

Duties will include the recruitment, training, supervision and evaluation of three permanent staff, as well as students, volunteers and employment program personnel; scheduling hours of work; providing loan service through an automated circulation system; providing complex level reference service through traditional and electronic resources; assisting patrons in the use of information technology and library services; providing reader's advisory service; planning and implementing library programs for children and adults; performing community analysis; marketing the library and its services; engaging in public, community and media relations; making public presentations; participating in the selection and maintenance of library collections; serving as secretary to the library board; orienting and coaching library board members; managing the library board budget provided by the municipality and submitting budget requests to the municipality in cooperation with the library board; working in conjunction with the board and the municipality to maintain the library facility; participating in the development of needs analysis for library space; ensuring the completion of reports required by the Canadian Revenue Agency; maintaining positive relations with the community and with the staff of the library region; developing partnerships; applying for and managing grants; and assuming other duties as assigned. The Director will also be responsible for the maintenance of collections, the shelving of materials and shelf reading.

This position requires evening and week-end shifts. Travel will be required and the successful candidate must possess a valid driver's license. Maintaining library collections will involve some lifting.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Masters degree in Library and/or Information Studies from an ALA accredited school and at least two (2) years of experience that includes supervision of staff. Knowledge of library automation, of electronic reference tools, of the principles of collection development and of community relations are essential. Experience with e-mail, the Internet and Ms-Word are necessary. Written and spoken competence in English and French is essential.

The successful candidate will possess excellent management, leadership, communication, interpersonal and supervisory skills. A demonstrated sense of organization as well as a strong aptitude for problem solving, analysis and team work is necessary.

CONCOURS PUBLIC

Le Service des bibliothèques publiques du Nouveau-Brunswick (SBPNB) est à la recherche d'un(e) bibliothécaire dynamique et enthousiaste à l'égard de la mission des bibliothèques publiques pour gérer la Bibliothèque publique Smurfit-Stone à Bathurst (une ville de 13 000 personnes). La bibliothèque fait partie de la Région de bibliothèques Chaleur.

FONCTIONS : Relevant de la directrice régionale, le directeur ou la directrice doit assurer la prestation d'un service de bibliothèque de qualité à la communauté et les environs. Il ou elle doit gérer la bibliothèque conformément aux lignes directrices provinciales. À titre de bibliothécaire, il/elle doit appuyer la directrice régionale en participant au développement des services dans la région; en recommandant et en participant à la mise en oeuvre des programmes, priorités, politiques et lignes directrices régionales et provinciales; en participant à des comités régionaux et provinciaux; en gérant des projets spéciaux; en se servant de son expertise pour offrir du mentorat et des conseils au personnel de la région par l'entremise d'activités de formation professionnelle ou autres; et en agissant comme employé(e) substitut (intérim) pour d'autres membres du personnel selon les besoins.

Les fonctions consistent, entre autres, à recruter, former, superviser et évaluer trois employées permanentes ainsi que les étudiant(e)s, bénévoles et employé(e)s de projet; à planifier les horaires de travail; à offrir des services de prêt au moyen d'un système informatisé; à offrir des services de référence de niveau complexe au moyen d'outils traditionnels et électroniques; à aider les usagers à utiliser les ordinateurs et à se prévaloir des différents services; à offrir des conseils aux lecteurs; à planifier et à mettre en oeuvre des programmes pour enfants et adultes; à effectuer des analyses communautaires; à faire le marketing de la bibliothèque et de ses services; à mener des activités de relations publiques, communautaires et avec les médias; à faire des présentations publiques; à participer à la sélection et à l'entretien des collections; à agir à titre de secrétaire de la commission de la bibliothèque; à orienter et à encadrer les membres de la commission; à soumettre les demandes budgétaires et à gérer le budget de la commission fourni par la municipalité, en collaboration avec la commission; à travailler en collaboration avec la commission et la municipalité afin d'assurer l'entretien de la bibliothèque; à participer à l'élaboration des analyses de besoins relatives aux installations; à soumettre les rapports requis par l'Agence du revenu du Canada; à entretenir des relations positives avec la communauté et le personnel de la région; à mettre sur pied des partenariats; à soumettre des demandes de subvention et à les gérer; et à accomplir les autres tâches qui lui sont confiées. Le directeur ou la directrice verra également à entretenir la collection, à replacer les livres sur les rayons et à effectuer la lecture des rayons.

Ce poste comprend des heures de travail en soirée et la fin de semaine. La personne choisie pourrait être appelée à se déplacer et doit posséder un permis de conduire valide. Le travail en bibliothèque exige de soulever du matériel à l'occasion.

CONDITIONS DE CANDIDATURE : Maîtrise d'un programme en bibliothéconomie et/ou sciences de l'information accréditée par l'ALA; au moins deux (2) années d'expérience comprenant la surveillance du personnel; ainsi que la connaissance de logiciels de bibliothèque, des principaux outils de référence électronique, des principes de gestion de collection et des relations communautaires. Il est aussi nécessaire de savoir utiliser le courrier électronique, Internet et le logiciel MS-Word. La connaissance du français et de l'anglais, à l'oral et à l'écrit, est essentielle.

La personne choisie saura faire preuve de leadership et possèdera d'excellentes aptitudes pour la gestion, la supervision, les communications et les relations interpersonnelles. Elle aura aussi un bon sens de l'organisation et de très bonnes habiletés pour l'analyse, la résolution de problèmes et le travail d'équipe.

Les personnes candidates doivent préciser dans leur demande où, quand et comment elles ont acquis les compétences et habiletés requises pour ce poste.
