ELLIOTT, Shirley Burnham - Born in Port Williams, June 4, 1916, Shirley
Burnham Elliott, M.A., S.B., D.C.L., LL.D., O.N.S., of Wolfville, died in
Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, October 15, 2004. A librarian, scholar,
community volunteer and mentor, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Malcolm
R. and Jean Haley Elliott. She graduated from Acadia University in 1937 and
in 1939. After graduating from library school in Boston, she spent six years
at Brookline Public Library and three years at the University of Rhode
Island. In 1951, she began to organize library service for Colchester and
Hants Counties. Three years later she was appointed Legislative Librarian at
Province House in Halifax, where she served for 28 years. During her tenure
much of the province's history was preserved and documented. She was the
author of six books, including The Nova Scotia Book of Days. An active
member of the Wolfville Branch CFUW and the Wolfville Historical Society,
she played a key role in the creation of the Wolfville Memorial Library. A
year ago she was awarded the Order of Nova Scotia. Survived by two nieces
and two nephews, as well as six much loved great-nieces and nephews. Besides
her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Robbins. A memorial service
is planned for Wolfville United Baptist Church on Saturday, October 23 at 11
a.m., Rev. Dr. Barry Morrison officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in
memory may be made to the CFUW Charitable Trust, CFUW National Office, 251
Bank St., Suite 600, Ottawa, ON, K2P 1X3 or Victorian Order of Nurses
