The Provincial Library will be hosting a broadcast of the OLA Audio
Conference "Helping Boys Find Entry Points to Reading". Join
William Brozo, Professor of Literacy in the Graduate School of Education
at George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia, and author of numerous
articles and books on literacy development for children and young
adults, as he draws on the insights gained from researching the literacy
lives of boys. This research has reinforced his convictions about the
kinds of books adolescent boys will read and why, when given the
prerogative and support.
This sixty minute audio session will be of particular interest to
library staff and others who provide instructional and library services
to teen and preteen youth. The program will heighten awareness of the
unique literacy needs of boys, discuss new strategies for engaging boys
as readers and bring genres and titles that have been shown to capture
boys' imaginations to the attention of participants.
Key Topics:
Literacy and Masculine Identity
Honoring Boys' Discourses of Desire
Creating Responsive Literacy Curricula for Boys
The Right Stuff at the Right Level in the Right Ways
