I've been meaning to respond to this for a while, but with summer courses etc. have not.
First off, I have to say I agree that the position needs a professional library over a library tech (and, in reality, probably both -- and then some).
However, I question the degree to which a more rural area library would be able to attract a professional librarian without adding some serious perks.
So, on the one hand, I think its important to advocate on behalf of professional librarians, but also I think professional associations should consider supporting a policy-study to make recommendations on how to attract librarians to rural areas.
There's got to be some DoE/HRSC funding available for this sort of thing.
Heck, you might even be able to grab some students (Public admin or library science) from some university (Universite de Moncton or Dal) to help out.

We are working to get letters of support from other library associations. If you are interested in supporting our e-mail/letter-writing campaign, please contact me.
