University of Arizona
Southwest Institute for Research on Women - SIROW
Executive Director

The Dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences invites applications
and nominations for the position of Executive Director of the Southwest
Institute for Research on Women (SIROW). It is anticipated that the successful
candidate will be an associate or full professor. We are searching for a
nationally recognized scholar whose outstanding administrative and leadership
skills can further develop the trajectory that has made SIROW a national leader
of and model for feminist research centers. We seek applicants who are familiar
with and supportive of a wide range of theoretical and methodological
approaches current in the interdisciplinary study of women and gender. As the
UA has committed itself to diversifying its faculty, staff, and student body
(see various institutional reports at
http://diversity.arizona.edu/reports/reports.shtml), the successful candidate
must have experience working with diverse students, colleagues, and
community-based organizations. Due to SIROW?s regional location and multiple
constituencies, Spanish-language competency is an asset to the Executive
Director.

SIROW?s mission is to develop, conduct, and disseminate interdisciplinary and
inter-institutional collaborative research and educational/outreach projects of
importance to the diverse groups of women and girls in the southwestern US and
northwestern Mexico. SIROW is a research and outreach unit housed in the
Department of Women?s Studies; the department?s 11 full-time faculty
members have earned it international distinction in teaching and research.

The tenure home of the Executive Director will be in Women?s Studies with the
possibility of a joint appointment in another unit on the University of Arizona
campus; the Executive Director reports to the Head of Women?s Studies. The
Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the development of SIROW?s
agenda, in conjunction with SIROW academic professionals; identifying sources
of funding and developing relations with funding agencies; working with
scholars and community-based organizations in developing proposals and/or
administering projects; contributing to the dissemination of the results of
SIROW projects and programs to local, regional, national and international
audiences; maintaining a network of scholars in the SIROW region; serving as
liaison to policy makers, media, and the public; and overseeing the work of
research assistants and support staff. A strong track record of research and
publication is essential, as are service to the university, professional
organizations, and the wider community. For further information on Women?s
Studies, see: http://w3.arizona.edu/~ws/; for SIROW, see:
http://w3.arizona.edu/~ws/sirow.html.

We anticipate an appointment, subject to final budgetary approval, to begin
August, 2004. To apply, complete the on-line faculty application at
www.uacareertrack.com. Follow ?Search Postings? and enter job number 30055.
Be prepared to attach a CV and cover letter describing scholarship and
administrative experience, including the development and management of funded
projects. Applicants should also give evidence of their ability to contribute
to SIROW?s missions as described above. Instructions for submitting three
letters of recommendation are provided on-line. Review of applications will
begin March 19 and continue until the position is filled. As an equal
opportunity and affirmative action employer, the University of Arizona
recognizes the power of a diverse community and encourages applications from
individuals with varied experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds (M/W/D/V).
