QUALIFICATIONS:
The Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University is seeking an
energetic, outgoing individual with a commitment to academic
librarianship and the flexibility to enjoy a changing environment of
practice. The successful candidate will have a graduate degree from an
ALA-accredited program, accompanied by experience in a special or
academic library, excellent communication skills both oral and
written, expertise in the provision of reference services and experience
in library management. Knowledge of engineering or a marine-related
industry: fisheries, aquaculture, food technology, nautical science,
naval architecture, or marine technologies is desirable. Candidates
should also have an interest in staff development and training, and
familiarity with library instruction and end-user training.
DESCRIPTION:
This position is responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient
operation of the Library, including its Information Services, Lending
Services, Collections Development, and Information Resources Management;
for assessing the potential impact and use of technological innovations
within the Division; and for managing staff development and
contributions to Library operations. As Head of Public Services, the
successful applicant will be heavily involved in the provision of
reference service, library instruction, and collection development. As a
member of the University Libraries' professional staff, the successful
applicant will participate in system-wide programs and initiatives.
The Dr. C.R. Barrett Library is one of four libraries within the
Memorial University Libraries. It serves the faculty, staff, and
students of the University's Fisheries and Marine Institute. It also
serves the faculty, staff, and students of the Engineering Technology
Centre, College of the North Atlantic. The Library's evolving mandate
also requires the provision of services to the marine industry in the
province.
The Fisheries and Marine Institute of the Memorial University of
Newfoundland is a world-class facility for advanced marine research and
education. The mission of the Marine Institute is to provide education
and training, applied research, and technology transfer in support of
client industries on a national and international basis. The Marine
Institute designs and delivers programs that provide graduates with

year diplomas of technology, two-year technician diplomas, and one-year
technical and vocational certificate programs, combined with a variety

BENEFITS:
An appointment at the rank of Librarian I or II is anticipated. Based on
experience and qualifications, salary floors are $37,667 and $43,543
respectively. This position carries an administrative stipend of $2500.
