TECHNICAL SERVICES LIBRARIAN

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
New Brunswick Public Library Service

York Library Region, Fredericton

OPEN

New Brunswick Public Library Service (NBPLS) is searching for a creative and
dynamic individual with a demonstrated enthusiasm for the mission of public
libraries, to serve as Technical Services Librarian for the York Library
Region.

DUTIES: Reporting to the Assistant Regional Director, the Technical
Services Librarian manages the Technical Services Unit and provides
professional support to the Regional Management Team.

Duties include: overseeing the processing of shelf ready materials for
public libraries; participating in strategic and operational planning with
the Regional Management Team; participating in the hiring of staff, and
ensuring the training, supervision and evaluation of staff; overseeing
quality control, workflow and performance standards for technical services;
managing the technical services budget and supplies; establishing policies
and procedures; taking part in regional and provincial committees; acting as
a regional resource person for technical services modules in the automated
library system, as well as for the conservation and preservation of library
materials; liaising with the Provincial Technical Services Unit and local
libraries regarding the cataloguing, classification and circulation of
processed materials; leading regional and provincial database and research
projects relating to processing, cataloguing and classification;
participating in collection analysis, inventory and management by
organizing, evaluating, selecting, rotating, weeding local and regional
collections and recommending areas for development; participating in
indexing and abstracting projects; assessing materials requiring mending,
binding, withdrawal or replacement; participating in the assessment and
retention of donations; evaluating and recommending potential
vendors, and negotiating purchase agreements; overseeing the compilation of
regional technical services statistics and reports; and preparing
employment grant requests as required.

Some travel will be required and the successful candidate must possess a
valid driver's license. The position will involve some lifting.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must possess a Masters degree in Library and/or
Information Science from an American Library Association accredited school.
They must have a good understanding of technical services, cataloguing and
classification standards, indexing and abstracting, database management,
conservation and preservation of materials, as well as of the principles of
collection development. Strong knowledge of library automation, e-mail, the
Internet and Ms-Word is necessary. Written and spoken competence in English
is essential.

The successful candidate will possess excellent management, leadership,
communication, interpersonal and supervisory skills. A demonstrated sense
of organization as well as a strong aptitude for problem solving, analysis
and team work is necessary.

CONCOURS PUBLIC

Le Service des bibliothèques publiques du Nouveau-Brunswick cherche une
personne énergique, créative et enthousiaste à l'égard de la mission des
bibliothèques publiques pour agir à titre de bibliothécaire des services
techniques pour la Région de bibliothèques York.

FONCTIONS : Relevant de la directrice régionale adjointe; le ou la
bibliothécaire des services techniques gère l'unité des services techniques
et fournit un soutien professionnel à l'équipe régionale de gestion.

Les responsabilités consistent, entre autres, à superviser le traitement des
documents afin qu'ils soient prêts à être placés sur les rayons des
bibliothèques; participer à la planification stratégique et opérationnelle
avec l'équipe régionale de gestion; participer à l'embauche du personnel et
voir à leur formation, supervision et évaluation; veiller au contrôle de
qualité, à l'organisation de la chaîne de travail et à la mise en oeuvre de
normes de rendement; gérer le budget et les fournitures de l'unité; établir
des politiques et procédures; être membre de comités régionaux et
provinciaux; agir à titre de personne-ressource régionale pour les modules
informatisés des services techniques ainsi qu'en matière de conservation des
documents; jouer un rôle de liaison entre les services techniques
provinciaux et les bibliothèques de la région concernant les questions liées
au catalogage, à la classification et au prêt de documents traités; diriger
des projets de recherche et de bases de données liés au traitement, au
catalogage et à la classification des documents; participer à l'analyse, à
l'inventaire et à la gestion des collections en organisant, évaluant,
sélectionnant, organisant des rotations, élaguant les collections locales et
régionales et recommandant des secteurs à développer; participer à des
projets d'indexation et d'analyse documentaire; évaluer les
documents à réparer, à relier, à élaguer ou à remplacer; participer à
l'évaluation et à la sélection des dons; évaluer et recommander des
fournisseurs potentiels, et négocier des ententes; superviser la compilation
des statistiques et des rapports régionaux pour les services techniques; et
élaborer des demandes de subvention d'emploi, au besoin.

La personne choisie pourrait être appelée à se déplacer et doit posséder un
permis de conduire valide. Le travail exige de soulever du matériel à
l'occasion.

CONDITIONS DE CANDIDATURE : Les candidat(e)s doivent détenir une maîtrise
d'un programme de bibliothéconomie et/ou sciences de l'information reconnue
par l'«American Library Association». Vous devez posséder une bonne
connaissance des services techniques, des normes de classification et de
catalogage, de l'indexation et de la rédaction d'abstract, de la gestion de
base de donnée, de la conservation et la préservation de documents ainsi que
des principes de développement de collection. Vous devez également avoir de
solides connaissances en matière d'automatisation de bibliothèque, ainsi que
du courriel, Internet et Ms-Word. La connaissance de l'anglais, à l'oral et
à l'écrit, est essentielle.

La personne choisie possèdera possédera d'excellentes aptitudes pour la
gestion, la direction d'équipe, la supervision, les communications et les
relations interpersonnelles. Elle aura aussi un bon sens de l'organisation
et de très bonnes habiletés pour l'analyse, la résolution de problèmes et le
travail d'équipe.
