Hi everyone,

Recently I returned from an enjoyable one week Summer Institute on
'Electronic Texts and Images' organized by UNB's Electronic Text
Centre (http://www.lib.unb.ca/Texts/). The presenter was David
Seaman, Executive Director of the Digital Library Federation
(http://www.diglib.org) from the Council on Library and Information
Resources (http://www.clir.org/).

Suffice to say David was a superb presenter -  presentation abilities
that combine a sophisticated technical know-how with an informed
sense of the academic library milieu, considering various user needs,
and requisite managerial expectations for creating and maintaining
digital collections, is very rare these days. Further, when the
material is conveyed with continued patience and a sense of humor,
what else can you ask for? I highly recommend the Institute for your
consideration next year.

If you haven't read the attached piece re. 'Deep Sharing: A Case for
the Federated Digital Library' by David Seaman, I thought it might
provide some further reflection on collaboratively pooled academic
library content for online users. I know this is a contentious issue
for some, but here comes the future!  APLA might want to look at
having David Seaman speak to this vision at a future conference(?).
