Announcing: OPERATION BOOK ANGEL
Have you earned your wings yet?
In recent weeks people around the world have been alarmed by the wave of
repression unleashed against Cuba's peaceful civil society, including raids
on 22 independent libraries and the confiscation of thousands of their books.
Librarians and others traveling to Cuba with Susan Weber's library tour are
invited to participate in OPERATION BOOK ANGEL by visiting an independent
library in Cuba and offering the gift of a few books. In addition to
obtaining a fair and balanced look at ALL Cuban libraries, not just the
censored "official" institutions, visitors are guaranteed to receive a warm
Cuban welcome when visiting any of Cuba's 200 independent libraries.
If you would like to consider becoming a Book Angel, please take a look at
our website (WWW.FRIENDSOFCUBANLIBRARIES.ORG) for recent news, addresses of
the independent libraries, travel tips, and suggestions regarding books
suitable as gifts. Feel free to contact us at any time, and we would be
pleased to provide a few Spanish-language books as much-needed gifts for
Cuba's brave independent librarians. Their innovative challenge to a
national system of censorship is making history, and the Book Angels who
bring them a gift of books will be making history, too.
