Freedom to Read Week

The Book and Periodical Council's Freedom of Expression Committee is
pleased to announce the 19th annual Freedom to Read Week, February 23 -
March 1, 2003.

The Canadian Library Association is pleased to show its continuing
support for both the Book and Periodical Council, Freedom to Read Week
and the principles of intellectual freedom. CLA is represented on the
Book and Periodical's Board as well as their Freedom of Expression
Committee.

The CLA's Advisory Committee on Intellectual Freedom was proud to
announce the selection of Peter Carver, Nancy Fleming, and Sarah Thring
as joint recipients of the CLA Award for the Advancement of Intellectual
Freedom in Canada in 2002. The Award, given when merited, recognizes and
honours outstanding contributions to intellectual freedom in Canada, by
individual librarians or by libraries and institutions. It was presented
at the CLA annual conference in Halifax, in a ceremony to held on the
morning of Thursday, June 20.

Through their longstanding work on the Freedom to Read Kit, sponsored
by the Book and Periodical Council, Mr.Carver, Ms. Fleming and Ms.
Thring have demonstrated outstanding leadership in, and outstanding
contribution to, the promotion of intellectual freedom in Canada.

The 2003 Kit contains all new material, including activities for school
and libraries and one folded Freedom to Read Week poster. Be sure to
visit the Freedom to Read Week website at www.freedomtoread.ca.

Kits may be ordered directly from the Book and Periodical Council,
prepaid, at $15.00 including GST and shipping. Orders for 10 kits or
more, shipped to a single address, receive a 20% discount and may be
accompanied by a purchase order. Flat, rolled, full-colour posters are
available for $8.00 each including GST and shipping.
