University Librarian
Position Description:
Reporting to the Academic Vice President and Provost, the University
Librarian is responsible for the effective functioning of the Library,
including: leadership, administration of the library, supervision of
nine professional librarians and thirty support staff, budget
management, integration of emerging technologies, maintenance of
traditional resources, participation on local and national library
consortia and associations, promotion of library services, establishing
long range goals and maintaining the library's memberships in the
Novanet Consortium and the Council of Atlantic University Libraries. The
initial appointment is a six year term commencing July 1, 2003 with the
possibility of renewal.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will possess an ALA-accredited MLS degree with
a minimum of five years administrative experience in a post-secondary
academic library. The applicant should also have proven leadership and
management skills, strong written, oral and interpersonal communication
skills, demonstrated familiarity with current and developing
technologies, an understanding of information literacy issues and a
commitment to staff development. In addition, the candidate will be
conversant with current issues facing academic libraries, promote the
integration of information resources into teaching, research and
learning, and advocate for the library, within the library, university
and beyond.
The Library:
The Angus L. Macdonald library houses a diverse collection of over
450,000 volumes which also provides facilities for government documents,
a large music and microfilm collection, the university archives, rare
books room, a unique Celtic collection, in-house bindery as well as two
computer labs housing 55 computers.
