The University Library of Memorial University of Newfoundland is
seeking a mid-career practitioner who enjoys challenges and is
looking for something slightly different in a job, in a location,
and in an institution; one who is attracted by the challenges of
providing leadership in a collaborative and consultative
environment. All energetic, outgoing individuals with a
commitment to academic librarianship and the flexibility to enjoy
a changing environment of practice are cordially invited to
consider applying for the following position on our senior
management team.

POSITION: ASSOCIATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN

DESCRIPTION

The Associate University Librarian is an integral part of the
senior management team in the library system, working closely
with, and deputizing for, the University Librarian. Located in
the Queen Elizabeth II Library, the central branch of a highly
centralized library system, the position carries responsibility
for all personnel matters regarding support staff in the branch
and for leading the library system in the creation of structures
and programs supporting staff development including liaison with
the University's Human Resources Department. There is likely to
be an opportunity to participate in labour-management affairs.

Immediate challenges for the position include planning for the
renovation of the Queen Elizabeth II Library. In this role the
position will be actively involved in liaison with Memorial's
Facilities Management unit. Memorial is in the process of
adopting new planning and budgeting regimes and the position will
participate in the redefinition of the Library's budget in
consort as part of that process. In the longer term, there is an
element of flexibility in the position which can be molded in
accordance with the individual's experience and capabilities.

The Queen Elizabeth II Library has an annual budget of ca. $10M,
a staff complement of more than 30 librarians and approximately
100 support staff. The administrative organization of the
library is quite flat, and there is a strong tradition of
cooperation and mutual assistance within the branch and between
branches of the Memorial University Libraries.

Memorial University is a large and comprehensive university with
a strong complement of professional schools as well as a broad
range of programs in the Arts and Sciences. As the province's
only university, Memorial plays an integral role in the
educational and cultural life of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Offering diverse undergraduate and graduate programs to almost
16,000 students, Memorial provides a distinctive and stimulating
environment for learning in St. John's, a safe, friendly city
with great historic charm, a vibrant cultural life, and easy
access to a wide range of outdoor activities.

Richard H. Ellis at the address below.

QUALIFICATIONS

Organizational and communication skills of a high order are
requisite. A record of successful execution of significant
administrative responsibility, including support staff management
will be sought and familiarity with budgeting will be an asset.
The successful candidate will have an ALA accredited graduate
degree.

BENEFITS

An appointment at the rank of Librarian III or IV is anticipated.
Salary ranges are 45,918 - 75,948 and 54,108 - 95,058
respectively depending on experience and qualifications. In
addition to the base salary, the position carries an
administrative stipend. Memorial offers standard academic
benefits including access to sabbatical leaves and release time
for professional development.

PROCEDURE

Processing of applications will begin 1 December, 2002 and will
continue until an appointment has been made. The position is
available immediately.

Interested individuals should apply by sending a resume and names
of three references to:
