Gwynneth Evans and Paul Whitney Co-Winners of the CLA Outstanding
Service to Librarianship Award, 2002
Ottawa, Ontario, June 5, 2002 - The Canadian Library Association is
pleased to announce the selection of two librarians who exemplify the
spirit of librarianship as co-winners of the Association's highest
honour, the Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award for 2002. The
two honorees are: Gwynneth Evans of Ottawa, Ontario , recently retired
as Director-General, National and International Programs, the National
Library of Canada; and Paul Whitney of Vancouver, B.C, Chief Librarian
of Burnaby Public Library.
According to Special Awards Committee Chair, Vivienne Monty, "Gwynneth
and Paul have had quite different careers and live at almost the two
ends of this country. Nonetheless, they share many similar
characteristics. Excellence and service are not limited by geography.
Each have been cited as totally and selflessly committed to the
profession and to literacy. They have given generously of their time not
just to many worthy causes such as copyright but also to mentoring young
professionals. They have both been great catalysts to achieve results in
whatever endeavour they have undertaken. They have managed to bring
disparate groups together, inspiring collaboration and achieving
consensus. They have been there for colleagues, for staff, and for
members of the general public."
The CLA Outstanding Service to Librarianship Award, sponsored by
Bowker, recognizes achievement which is outstanding in its own field,
and of lasting significance in the development of Canadian library
service. The contribution may be for service of various kinds ranging
from local projects to those of countrywide scope, and may cover any
type of library activity. The award will be presented at the opening
ceremony of the CLA 2002 Conference , Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at the
World Trade and Convention Centre, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
