Madeleine Lefebvre Elected CLA President for 2003-2004; Yvonne Earle is
New Councillor

Ottawa, Ontario, June 3, 2002 -- Madeleine Lefebvre, University
Librarian at Saint Mary's University has been elected President of the
Canadian Library Association (CLA) for the 2003-2004 term. Active
internationally in professional associations and activities, she holds
memberships as follows:  the Atlantic Provinces Library Association;
American Library Association; the Australian Library and Information
Association; the Library Association; ACTRA; the Canadian Actors' Equity
Association; the British Actors' Equity Association. She has also been
granted certification as an Associate of the Australian Library and
Information Association. Ms. Lefebvre has served as Vice-Chair of the
Council of Atlantic University Libraries, and has been a member of the
National Library of Canada's Task Force on Resource-Sharing and CLA's
Copyright Committee. She has also served on the executive of the
Canadian Association of College and University Libraries (CACUL)  and
its Community and Technical College Libraries Section ( CTCL).  She
received her M.A from the University of Edinburgh, and  M.A. (Classics)
and M.L.S. degrees from the University of Alberta .

Ms. Lefebvre will serve as Vice-President/President-Elect for
2002-2003, and will assume the presidency in June of 2003 at the end of
the CLA conference in Toronto. She will serve a one- year term as
president. In her platform statement, Ms.Lefebvre stressed the need to
look forward in terms of rebuilding and extending CLA's membership
basis, as well as the importance of developing partnerships with other
organizations and the continued importance of lobbying for national
issues.

Yvonne Earle was elected for a three - year term to the position of
Councillor-at-Large. Ms.Earle is the Manager of Library & Information
Services for the Nunavut Department of Sustainable Development. She
holds a B.A. from Memorial University of Newfoundland, a B.L.S. from the
University of British Columbia and received her M.L.I.S. at the
University of Toronto.

CLA acknowledges with thanks the contribution of all candidates who
generously accepted nominations in this year's election: Rowena Lunn for
the position of Vice-President/President-Elect and Stephen Porrior and
Marjorie Whalen for the position of Councillor-at-Large.

CLA is the national English language association representing the
interests of all types of libraries and library workers. It was founded
in 1946 and is made up of 2800 members across five constituent
divisions: Canadian Association of College and University Libraries,
Canadian Association of Public Libraries, Canadian, Association of
Special Libraries and Information Services, Canadian Library Trustees
