FRENCH SERVICES LIBRARIAN (#4586)
(FULL-TIME CLASSIFIED POSITION)
DESCRIPTION: This position provides bilingual professional library leadership and management for services and staff of two French Branches, French collections, and services in 14 English rural Branches as well as the Rotary Regional Library in Summerside. This position involves developing, implementing and evaluating goals, objectives, programs and services in both official languages in partnership with staff, users, municipal councils, Friends groups and other external organizations. Duties will include:
- recommending appropriate policies, strategic plans, standards, goals and objectives for library services programs and systems;
- implementing collection policies and procedures related to the selection, retention, loan, weeding and discard of all French library materials, collections in the Rotary Regional Library as well as province-wide collections in collaboration with other professional staff;
- providing leadership and supervision of staff, and participating in staff recruitment, interviewing and selection processes;
- developing and delivering local programs such as author visits, literacy programming, computer and Internet training, etc. as well as participating in the province-wide planning and delivery of programs;
- administering, implementing and monitoring the French Services and Rotary Regional Library budgets including the approval of expenditures;
- assisting in the activities of library support groups such as local Friends of the Library;
- developing and maintaining contacts with outside community based organizations, and individuals;
- providing reference and circulation services on regular shifts, as well as on an emergency basis;
- explaining and interpreting policies, procedures and service to patrons and staff, and giving public service announcements and programming information to French media;
- ensuring that current methodologies, procedures and practices used in the provision of library services are maintained through continuing education opportunities, professional reading and professional activity;
- other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have a Masters Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA Accredited Program. This position requires demonstrated leadership, initiative, creativity, communication and advocacy skills. Applicants must be fluent in both English and French. Knowledge of automated library systems, Internet skills, database searching and training, Canadian writing and publishing, team and project management skills and adult programming would be considered assets. Supervisory experience and working with community based groups would also be an asset. A valid driver's license is required.
