Science Librarian


Dalhousie University Libraries seeks an enterprising and versatile
librarian to deliver a full range of information services to faculty and
students in the Sciences.  The Faculty of Science at Dalhousie
University is a major centre for science education and research in
Atlantic Canada, with  programs in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry and
Molecular Biology, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, Mathematics,
Microbiology, Physics, Oceanography, and Psychology. Additional Faculty

The Science librarian collaborates with faculty in the Faculty of
Science and subject specialists/library liaisons in the Killam, Kellogg
Health Sciences and Sexton Design and Technology Libraries at Dalhousie
University.  He/she, at present, reports to the Head of Science Services
in the Killam Library.  The Killam Library serves the research and
teaching needs of students, faculty and staff in the arts, social
sciences, sciences and management and is the largest of the four
libraries in the Dalhousie library system.  The collection of over 1
million volumes includes 3,500+ current serial subscriptions, both print

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities of the successful candidate will include:

- serve as a subject specialist/library liaison in selected science
disciplines;
- participate in the identification, evaluation and selection of
information including print, electronic and  Internet resources which
support Science's curriculum and research needs;
- establish and maintain connections with students, faculty and staff of
the Faculty of Science both in person and by electronic means;
- assess the needs of associated new courses, programs and research
projects and respond with appropriate services and collections
- develop relevant instruction and orientation sessions including lab
and classroom instruction, Web-based tutorials and Web bibliographies
for local and distant students;
- participate with other staff in the provision of all types of
reference assistance to users;
- maintain and enhance positive, effective and collaborative working
relationships with Library colleagues and with University faculty, staff
and students;
- serve on appropriate Library, University and professional committees;
- create strong liaisons with other science librarians across the
country and participate actively in professional library associations
and forums.


QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate must have a Master's degree or equivalent from
an ALA-accredited program; an undergraduate degree in physical or life
sciences; familiarity with print and online science information
resources; ability to use basic computer applications such as word
processing, spreadsheets and the Web; and demonstrated teaching
ability.  Experience in Web page creation and development is desirable.

The successful candidate must have good interpersonal skills; the
ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with
colleagues and library patrons individually and in groups; a high degree
of flexibility and openness to change; strong communication abilities; a
collaborative and enthusiastic outlook; and the ability to work openly
and effectively with diverse user groups.


AVAILABILITY OF POSITION:

The position is available June 1, 2002, subject to final budget
approval. This is a full-time probationary appointment. Rank and salary
are dependant upon qualifications and experience, and subject to the
terms of the Dalhousie Faculty Association Collective Agreement. It is
expected that the position will be filled at the mid-Librarian I to
Librarian II level, salary range $32,386 - $42,708 (currently under
negotiation).
