Memorial University of Newfoundland invites applications for a permanent,
tenure-track position in the University Library System.

          Head, Bibliographic Control Services Division
                    Queen Elizabeth II Library

Memorial University is seeking an individual with proven leadership
qualities, excellent oral and written communication skills, experience in
and an aptitude for personnel management, receptivity to new ideas and the
ability to think creatively. He/she must be able to set and achieve goals,
both cooperatively within a system and personally.

QUALIFICATIONS Applicants must have a Master's degree from an ALA
accredited graduate program and substantial experience in cataloguing
and/or acquisitions, including experience in a supervisory or management
role, preferably in an academic library.  The successful candidate will
demonstrate a good understanding of the evolving role of technical
services and the changing contribution of technical services personnel to
the library.  Evidence of the ability to formulate goals and carry them
through will be sought.  He/she will possess a solid understanding of
current issues and trends in technical services.

DESCRIPTION

The Bibliographic Control Services Division has a staff of five
librarians, including the Head, and 21 library assistants. It is the
largest of the technical services units in the library system and is
responsible for all processes associated with the acquisitions and
cataloguing of materials in all formats except serials.  The division
catalogues many unique titles for a comprehensive collection relating to
Newfoundland and for a specialized collection on marine resources. The
functional relationship between the division and other technical service
units in the system is still evolving.  The Memorial University Library
system is a Sirsi site.

The Division has a history of excellence.  It has an established record of
efficiency and innovation.  It was the first Canadian site to participate
in NACO (the Name Authority Cooperative Project) and is the home of the
Cataloguer's Toolbox web site.

The Head of the Bibliographic Control Services Division reports directly
to the University Librarian and is part of the senior management structure
in the central branch of the library system.  The division head has a
leadership role in the broader development of access and services for the
whole library system.  At Memorial, staff development is a priority at all
levels.

There will be an opportunity for the successful candidate to participate
in collection development activities or public service.

As the Province's only university, Memorial plays an integral role in the
educational and cultural life of Newfoundland and Labrador.  Offering
diverse undergraduate and graduate programs to almost 15,000 students,
Memorial provides a distinctive and stimulating environment for learning
in St. John's, a very safe, friendly city with great historic charm, a
vibrant cultural life including a symphony and vital theater, very
affordable housing, and easy access to a wide range of outdoor activities.

BENEFITS:

Memorial's practice is to hire individuals into tenure track positions at
an appropriate rank and salary. Administrative appointments such as
headships are made for three year terms (renewable on review) with a $2500
stipend in excess of salary.  It is anticipated that the successful
applicant will qualify for appointment at the rank of Librarian III or IV,
the combined salary range being $44,561 - $92,225.

Benefits include a moving allowance, standard pension and health plans,
and eligibility for sabbatical leaves and professional development
