Hi Everyone!

I'd like to remind people that the CAUT is holding its biennnial
Librarians' Conference this year on October 25, 26, and 27 in Ottawa.
The focus is on issues of professional worklife for Academic librarians
with arise from the advent of digital information technologies, and I
would expect it will be of interest to a lot of APLA members.

ACADEMIC LIBRARIANS IN THE DIGITAL AGE

Conference Description:

Digital technology is revolutionizing the workplace of academic
librarians.

This revolution holds more than the promise of instantaneous access to
information. It also presents the threat of a future in which the role
of academic librarians as facililitators of access to information is
undermined, as control of information is transferred from public to
private hands and access to it is relentlessly monitored and tightly
restricted to those who can afford to pay for it.  This in turn
threatens to compromise our mission of equitable and universal support
for learning, and the ensuing professional interests.

On October 25, 26 and 27, 2001, academic librarians will gather at the
Sheraton Hotel in Ottawa, Ontario to examine how, at the bargaining
table and in the broader community, we can deal with issues arising from
the onset of the digital age: its impact on the rights of academic
librarians, and on their ability to fulfil their professional
responsibilities.

Conference participants will have the opportunity to hear the views of
invited speakers and to share their own knowledge and experience on the
challenges presented by digital information technology.
