Read By The Sea Literary Festival in River John, Nova Scotia, July 21, 2001
David Adams Richards, George Elliott Clarke, Donna Morrissey, Carole
Bruneau and Deirdre Kessler will be guest readers at Read by the Sea, 2001,
in River John
Read by the Sea is a day to hear the best of Atlantic literature read by
its authors. Set aside all, or a part of July 21 and come to River John,
(Route 6, The Sunrise Trail between Amherst and Pictou). Events start with
readings by children's author Deidre Kessler at 10:30 a.m. at the Royal
Canadian Legion...outside if the weather allows. Deirdre Kessler, of Prince
Edward Island is the much loved author of Lobster in my Pocket, Lena and
the Whale and the Brupp series.
In the afternoon, bring your lawn chair and relax around the gazebo in
the Legion's arboreal gardens, (rain venue: River John School). From 2:00
p.m. - 5:00 p.m. acclaimed Atlantic writers will read from their recent
works. Hear David Adams Richards, winner of the Giller award for Mercy
Among the Children, also George Elliott Clarke, lively and innovative poet,
and Donna Morrissey, author of Kit's Law and Carole Bruneau, with her debut
novel Purple for Sky.
A smoked pork chop barbecue supper will be available at the Legion at
6:00 p.m., cost
$12.00. Stay and mingle with the authors in this informal setting.
In the Legion Hall, at 7:30 p.m., an open mic/open bar set the
atmosphere for aspiring new authors to read from their works in progress.

Admission is free. Come and celebrate summer with Atlantic literature.
