Reference Librarian (Entry Level;Tenure-track)

Ferris State University, a national leader in career-oriented,
technological, and professional education, is currently recruiting for the
position of Reference Librarian (Entry Level).

Responsibilities:  Provides traditional and online reference and
instructional services.  Shares general and specialized reference and
consultation services, including some evenings and weekends.  Serves as the
liaison to one or more academic departments; liaison services include
outreach activities, specialized instruction/information literacy,
reference/research assistance, and collection development in assigned
subject areas.  Participates in library assessment and appropriate
university-wide and professional activities.  This is an excellent
opportunity to work and learn in a dynamic, technology-intensive
library/information center.

Qualifications:
Required: ALA-accredited masters degree in library or information science.
Effective communication, interpersonal and organizational skills; strong
public service orientation; ability to work independently and as part of a
team.  Familiarity in using electronic information systems, including
online catalogs and networked and web-based information resources.
Preferred: Evidence of course work or experience in reference; experience
in web content development; additional graduate degree.

Salary and Benefits: $32,000-38,000 for a 12-month, tenure-track, faculty
appointment with rank, plus an excellent benefits package valued at
approximately 36% of base salary.  Comprehensive benefits are provided
(after applicable eligibility and accrual periods) including 20 days
vacation, two days personal leave, paid holidays, insurance (health,
dental, vision, life, disability), medical reimbursement account,
retirement system options, e.g., TIAA-CREF (with 12% university

Serving close to 10,000 students, Ferris State University offers 120
academic programs in a diversity of disciplines, with graduate and
professional programs in optometry, pharmacy, criminal justice
administration, information systems management, and education.  FLITE
(Ferris Library for Information, Technology, and Education), our new,
highly electronic, technologically advanced library facility, opened in
March.  At 173,000 sq. ft. FLITE is three times the size of the former
library building and features a variety of public work and study spaces, a
total seating capacity of 1,300, and computer connectivity for more than
1,000 users.  The library recently migrated to the Innovative Interfaces
Millennium system.

Ferris's main campus is located in Big Rapids, Michigan, a city of 12,000
located on the picturesque Muskegon River, 55 miles north of Grand Rapids
and within 220 miles of Detroit and Chicago.  Nestled in the middle of
western Michigan's vacation heartland, this former logging community offers
a variety of recreational opportunities, including canoeing, tubing, and
fishing on the Muskegon; biking, hiking, and cross-country skiing on the
White Pine trail; camping in four county parks; and boating, swimming, and
