Dalhousie University Libraries seeks an energetic and resourceful
librarian to provide optimum access to the print and electronic
collections of the Killam Library. This position will take a lead role
in developing integrated access to the full array of information
resources available to the user community. The Dalhousie Libraries are a
member of Novanet,  a consortium of academic libraries in Nova Scotia
who cooperate to enhance access to information and knowledge for the
benefit of their user communities. Novanet uses the Geac ADVANCE Library
System to create its union catalogue and to manage its collections.

The Head of Technical Services is responsible for operational management
of all technical services functions including acquisition, serials
control, cataloguing and conservation. He/she collaborates with
technical and public services staff in the Killam, Kellogg Health
Sciences, Law and DalTech libraries to ensure the provision of
bibliographic access to library materials and to contribute to the
further development and improvement of Technical Services processes and
systems.  The Head of Technical Services  reports to the Assistant
University Librarian, Collection Development, Organization & Management
with strong linkages to the Assistant University Librarian, Library
Systems and serves on the Libraries' Policy Advisory Committee.

The Killam Library serves the research and teaching needs of students,
faculty and staff in the arts, social sciences, sciences and management
and is the largest of the four libraries in the Dalhousie library
system.  The collection of over 1 million volumes includes 3,500+
current serial subscriptions, both print and electronic. Access to
electronic collections is also provided through the Dalhousie Libraries'

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities of the successful candidate will include :
   - In consultation with the Assistant University Librarian, Collection
Development, Organization &  Management, establish goals and priorities
for Technical Services, including planning and assessment
activities
   - Supervise Killam Library's Technical Services (20.66 FTE) and
direct acquisitions, cataloguing, conservation, authority control,
serials check-in and database maintenance activities
   - Integrate Technical Services activities in a streamlined workflow
   - Ensure high quality, productivity and adherence to standards in all
aspects of bibliographic control and for all formats
   - Investigate and recommend alternative cataloguing procedures for
access to electronic formats
   - Assist in administration and operation of integrated library
system, including conversion and migration projects
   - Coordinate, monitor and train staff in traditional and emerging
aspects of Technical Services processing
   - Negotiate with suppliers and vendors terms and conditions for
delivery and use of library materials
   - Manage the expenditure of the acquisitions budget
   - Participate in Novanet consortial committees relevant to Technical
Services operations
   - Serve on appropriate Library, University and professional
committees
   - Create strong liaisons with other technical services librarians
locally and across the country and participate actively in professional
library associations and forums


QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate must have a Master's degree or equivalent from
an ALA-accredited program; a minimum of five years of successful,
progressively responsible professional experience in Technical Services
processing including some experience at the supervisory level; mastery
of cataloguing principles and practice, including AACR2, MARC formats
(including holdings), LCSH and LC classification, authority control and
metadata standards;  knowledge of and experience with integrated library
automated systems as well as familiarity with bibliographic utilities
and Z39.50 technology; knowledge of standards, issues and trends in
acquisitions, digital library initiatives and electronic publishing;
direct experience with library applications in a networked environment;
familiarity with HTML, spreadsheets and database programs.  Proven
managerial and leadership experience is preferred. Experience with
resource-sharing consortia would be an asset. Some knowledge of French
or German is desirable.

The successful candidate must have good problem-solving and
organizational skills; the ability to create and maintain effective
working relationships with colleagues and library patrons, individually
and in groups; a high degree of flexibility and openness to change;
strong communication abilities; a collaborative and enthusiastic
outlook; and the ability to work openly and effectively with diverse
groups.


AVAILABILITY OF POSITION:

The position is available May 1, 2001, subject to final budget
approval.  This is a full-time probationary appointment.  Rank and
salary are dependant upon qualifications and experience and subject to
the terms of the 2000-2001 Dalhousie Faculty Association Collective
Agreement.
