The Halifax Library Association is pleased to announce the following
workshop (please note that space is very limited - see registration
information below):
Recasing the Cloth-Bound Book:
A Book Repair Workshop with Julia Landry of
Leaf by Leaf Book & Paper Conservation Services
April 6-7, 2001
(Friday 9am - 4:30 pm and Saturday 9am-11am)
Dawson Printshop
Killam Library
Dalhousie University
When a cloth-bound (hardcover) book comes adrift from its covers it may
not need to be sent away for a full re-binding. There are remedial steps
that can be taken in-house if the textblock is securely sewn and covers
can be re-attached without seriously altering the appearance of the book.
These measure are cheaper than complete re-binding, the turnaround time
is much less, and this type of repair is ultimately much less damaging as
it does not alter the original integrity of the binding.
Julia Landry is part owner of Leaf by Leaf Book & Paper Conservation
Services and has an MA in preservation and conservation.
On Friday workshop participants will work on a hands-on project. Since
this will require overnight drying time, participants will return on
Saturday morning for a tour of the Dawson printshop and to pick up their
projects.
Supplies:
Please bring one or two cloth-bound books requiring repair (the text block
must be sewn , not glued). Other material will be supplied.
Cost:
$15 for HLA members and $25 for non-members
