Description: Located within the historical heart of downtown Charlottetown, the Confederation Centre Public Library is part of a unique area that celebrates the birthplace of Confederation. The library is part of a complex that includes an Art Gallery and a Performance Theatre. The Provincial Archives and Province House are located in the same city block.
The purpose of this position is to provide professional library leadership and management for services and staff of the Confederation Centre Public Library including the Children's Department, the provincial Video Library which provides services to schools and the public, as well as the Government Services Library which is similar in function to a legislative library. Within the guidelines of the Provincial Library Service and the supervision of the Provincial Librarian, this position develops, implements and evaluates goals, objectives, programs and services using a community based consultative model in order to fill the needs of the general public and specialized clients such as ethnic communities, the visually impaired and government employees. The position is also part of the province-wide library services management team of the Provincial Library Service which provides public library services for the province.
recommending appropriate policies, strategic plans, standards, goals and objectives for library services to the Provincial Librarian
devising ways and means to meet these standards, goals and objectives
coordinating workflow between staff and departments
recommending, maintaining and implementing collection policies and procedures related to selection, retention, loan and discard of library materials
providing leadership for the staff of Confederation Centre, Video and Government Service libraries
maintaining, developing and planning for human resources needs with the unit and participating in staff interviewing and selection
reviewing, evaluating and coaching staff through use of Performance Development Process
developing and delivering programming such as author visits, literacy, computer/Internet training, and book clubs for both children and adults
administering, developing, implementing and monitoring the budget for Confederation Centre, Video and Government Services libraries
coordinating the activities of library support groups such as the Friends of the Library and acting as secretary of the Trustees of the Legislative and Public Library
providing reference and circulation services on regular shifts as well as on an emergency basis
providing, in conjunction with departmental staff, public relations and communications contact
ensuring that current methodologies, procedures and practices used in the provision of library services are maintained through continuing education opportunities and professional reading and activities
other related duties as required.
Qualifications: Applicants must have a Masters Degree in Library and Information Science supplemented by five years extensive public library experience at a supervisory or managerial level. Successful candidates must have demonstrated leadership, initiative, creativity and advocacy skills as well as previous experience in developing and working with community based groups. Above average computer skills, experience using an automated library system and a good understanding of the French language would be desirable.
Salary Range: $20.29 - $25.36 per hour
